Making choices

by Anusha Atukorala

I walked around Woolworths buying my weekly groceries.  I saw the avocados and went straight to them.  At $2.89 each, they were dear. However, in they went, into the shopping trolley.

Shortly afterwards, I stepped into Foodland, a neighbouring supermarket. Reaching the fruit aisle, what did I see?  Avocados abounded there too, but oh dear… they were much cheaper.  And larger too!  “Too bad”, I thought, “I should have compared prices, before buying them’. Now I had to live with the choice I’d made.

The avocados tasted fine and no harm was done.  But it made me reflect on the way I made decisions in life.  I did want to follow God’s leading – most of the time!  Usually, I asked Him what He required of me.

But there were other times, when I made a quick decision and suffered the consequences.  I remembered the time I scolded my son before considering what he was saying. ‘Ouch’!  It made me feel guilty – rushing into judgment and hurting his feelings.  I should have listened to him first!

Why did I not stop to consider what God required of me?

“Choose My instruction instead of silver,

knowledge rather than choice gold”

Proverbs 8:10

Are our choices weighed in the balance of God’s wisdom?
