Does he shine?

by Anusha Atukorala

I sat on my garden swing. It was half past nine in the morning and my husband and son had left for school and work. I greatly enjoyed being there on my own, listening to the morning sounds; a new day beckoning me enticingly.

I swung myself gently, watching the expanse of azure blue sky ahead of me. The many gum trees around were waving their branches. I felt at peace. “This,” I thought, “is life!”

As I smiled with Him in my heart, my eyes fell on the leaves of the large beautiful gum tree at the back of our garden. It startled me to see that the leaves literally shone. Were they made of shiny material? I didn’t know. All I knew was that as the sun’s rays fell on them, they glistened. They seemed to shimmer and dance, shining gloriously.

It struck me with force that that’s indeed what we as Christians are called to do. The leaves of the gum tree didn’t need to shine. They just needed to be there.

All you and I need to do is to be ready and open before our God. The Son of God does the rest. He shines, not us. He does it all!

“In the same way, let your light shine before Men,

that they may see your good deeds and praise

your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:16

Are you trying to shine your light today?  Or does He shine through you?
