Directional slippage by Bruce Wadd Recently I caught up with a childhood friend of mine who
owned and moored a yacht in a fabulous part of the world – Whitsunday’s in
Thus we set out on a three-day journey, motoring for a time, waiting for the breeze to establish itself. Finally, after passing between two islands we had a stretch of open water ahead. With the SE trade wind starting to blow for the day, we hoisted and then trimmed the sails. With all of the necessary preparation under control we settled back for the pleasant journey to the next passage between two major islands.
Not being a sailor I watched ‘skip’ regularly check his
bearings and his sails. Sometimes he trimmed the sails, a little tighter or
slightly looser. At other times he adjusted the rudder ever so slightly. Upon asking him what was happening he informed me of a concept I had never considered before - ‘slippage in the breeze’,.
If the sails are not trimmed constantly the boat will naturally slip sideways in the water, pushed by the breeze. You can’t notice it very much, except when you get near the end of the journey where you discover yourself to be way off track. Then it means that big adjustments would be needed!!
Do you have things in your life that are causing you to slip sideways? How often do you trim your sails? Adjust your direction?
Jesus hungers for you to be heading in His direction TODAY!! He loves you immensely, and wants every part of you to be focused on Him.
