Wrong wrap

by Bruce Wadd

I really couldn’t say no, and with the festive season almost here the scruffy-looking gift was shoved in my face with a grunt. It was hard to take, receiving this gift!

I wanted to throw it in the bin immediately, but a moment’s intimacy and wisdom halted my intent. When the head of the giver lifted, and our eyes met, there was a glisten in the eye, something that you recognize not with your mind, but with your heart. This gift did mean something!

Patiently, I stopped what I was doing, and proceeded to unwrap the present, revealing a used plastic toy. It wasn’t something I really wanted, but as the smile of appreciation appeared on my lips, I realized that it wasn’t the gift that mattered most. No, it was the giving and receiving!

How many times has there been a gift wrapped poorly, or not at all, that you, without thinking, rejected? You may have missed a wonderful opportunity, a learning experience, a vital relationship?

I wonder how many times God, the ultimate giver of gifts, wraps the best ones with difficulties, and we as humans reject it, missing the preciousness of receiving valuable learning, insight and maturity?

Here is His greatest gift, Jesus. Rejecting this is eternally costly. Accepting it every day means new life with Him.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God

is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Romans 6:23

TODAY, accept and unwrap His gifts… despite how they are packaged!
