Where's the off switch?

by Bruce Wadd

Christmas Day is a classic occasion for ‘off’ switches.  Your child or grandchild gets a toy.  You kindly help them fit the batteries.  Not long after they are having so much fun playing with this new device - and then the next present arrives!

Interests wains immediately in the newly ‘batteried’ toy.  The used present is passed to you, as they begin unwrapping the next surprise.  You are left with this writhing noisy monster, and immediately you start searching for the ‘off’ switch.  However you discover, sometimes ‘off’ can be quite difficult to find.

Pain is no different.  Many people have pain in their lives.  It can be physical, emotional, psychological, long-term or short-term.  But every person’s natural response is the same.  We naturally look to ‘turn it off’; ignore it; deaden it in some way!

Through increased work, unrelenting pleasure, heavy drugs, binge drinking, talking, disappearing from society… there is no shortage of pain relief possibilities! But let me give you another perspective.

God, in His wisdom, has the ability to use pain for your benefit, only because Jesus took all the pain in the world on himself when He died.  He took the pain that you might be feeling right now, and extinguished its power, so that YOU could live a painless eternity with Him!

“…but those who trust in the Lord

shall be given every blessing.”

Psalms 37:11

Today, let Jesus be your ‘off’ switch!
