The question

by Karen Collum

Thomas, one of my ten year old students, came from a very difficult background.  His Dad was in jail and his mother was illiterate.  To compound matters, Thomas had a severe learning disability, thus, school was a difficult experience.

As his teacher, I did my best.  I encouraged him, talked to him, and took an interest in his life.  One of the greatest joys for Thomas was when I taught him how to do find-a-word puzzles.  The look of delight on his face was unforgettable.

As the year progressed, Thomas became my right-hand-man in the classroom, always ready to help in any way he could.  Then one day he floored me with a question, “Mrs. Collum, do you like me?”

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I said “yes”, and I meant it.  He was a delightful young man with a beautiful smile and a gentle spirit.  It was my privilege to be his teacher!

I wished I could have said and done more like scoop him up in my arms and tell him not only that I liked him, but that Jesus loved him.  Hopefully my actions spoke louder than my words!

We are all like Thomas - all asking the same question – “Do you like me?”  Here’s God’s answer…

“I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

Jeremiah 31:3

Today!  Let God’s love be the answer to the question in your heart.
