Thank you

by Bruce Wadd

One of my current favourite tennis players, Lleyton Hewitt, was on centre court. The battle was both arduous and exhilarating. The crowd experienced every ball, every stroke, every facial expression and grunt.

However, what particularly got my attention was the multitude’s behaviour towards the each player’s ‘on-court’ efforts. The patriotic crowd was backing the Aussie champion, but they were also appreciating the huge mental and physical struggle of both players.

Tensions rose with each point played – it was exciting to watch!

As the game drew to it’s dramatic conclusion I noted the rhythm of the throng enter a new dimension. After almost every play spectators would shout and cheer, usually words of encouragement for their hero, acting as a release valve for their strained emotions.

Unable to stay out of the fray any longer the umpire used a special and powerful crowd control technique. With the players waiting, and the crowd yet to quiet down, the match director merely said two words.

‘Thank you!’

The volume plummeted to silence and calm – peace fell on the match! The crowd showed high regard for the umpire and players alike.

It made me wonder what it’s going to be like when you and I stand before God in heaven. I wonder when ‘thank you’ is said, how we will respond. Adulation? Praise? Silent worship? Inspiration?

“I will praise the Lord no matter what happens.

I will constantly speak of His glories and grace.”

Psalms 34:1
