Shag on a rock

by Bruce Wadd

“Sitting like a shag on a rock” was a well-used saying in years gone by – not used as much in the 21st century!  What did it mean?  A person stands out, stand alone from other people.  Do you know someone like this?  Are you this person?

On a recent walk along a serene river setting I saw the live example of this saying.  There sitting upright on a large jetty was a cormorant (‘shag’ is a common name) with its wings spread wide in the early morning sunshine drying the wet feathers from overnight rain.  My initial reaction confirmed the saying - it really did stand out!

There are times in life where you look and feel like you are the ‘shag’, awkward, out-of-touch, disjointed in life!  You may have experienced times like these.  You may even be right in the midst of that time right now.

The good news is God’s ability to use, and to lead us to those points of awkwardness so that we come to rely on His strength even more.  Listen to the Psalmist as he stood…

“I stand silently before the Lord, waiting for him to rescue me.  For salvation comes from him alone.”  Psalms 62:1

Today, celebrate being a ‘shag’… God reliance will bring joy!
