Scratching for the horizon

by Bruce Wadd

When I surfed in the cold waters of the Southern Ocean the joy of the sport was often tested.  Only the hardy warriors, some say the ‘mentally challenged’, ventured into grey winter mornings, where there was rarely a hint of sunshine.  Often large swells would arrive, and thus it became the tension between great waves and freezing conditions.

I can remember one time when there were about twenty guys out enjoying pleasant one to two metre surf.  Having caught several waves I was really ‘in the groove’, when suddenly I noticed everyone paddling passionately towards the horizon.  I turned, looked seaward, and had that immediate gut reaction – oh no… a huge set!

Being fairly new to these conditions I just followed everyone else, but as I paddled I noticed that all these guys were leaving me behind - they were paddling with every ounce of strength!  It was becoming a life and death issue - a huge set on the horizon signified a real struggle for survival!

Right there I had to make a decision.  Do I keep paddling out or turn around and go in?  ‘Out’ meant ‘scratching for the horizon’, in other words hoping that the huge set wouldn’t land right on top of you.  ‘In’ saw you trying to get closer to shore, so that the waves would have broken by the time they hit you.

Sometimes things darken your horizon, but God often uses them to get your attention.  Has it got your attention?  Is there something coming that dropping you to your knees?  That pumps adrenalin through your veins? That gives you that ‘feeling in your gut’?

God promised…

“I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us

from His love.” Romans 8:38

TODAY, check your horizon, and then commit everything to Him!
