Regularly sharpened

by Bruce Wadd

My father used to tell me of his days spent in the bush as an axeman. He was in his early twenties, before the invention of chainsaws. Thus his tools of trade for cutting down these huge eucalyptus trees were a long saw (needed two people to work best) and a well-sharpened axe.

His day was simple. Up at sunrise, a quick breakfast and then walk down to the tree he was working on. With his axe sharpened in the previous evening, he would get straight into cutting in wedges to place the boards he was to stand on. He would position his board, climb on and begin chopping.

During the day he would stop for smoko (a short drinks break) and lunch, but the chopping would continue until the tree fell. Sometimes it would take all day to chop down a single tree – a massive undertaking!

But the secret, he would say, was the sharpened axe! He would regularly stop, taking time to resharpen his wood-cutting tool, meaning he could last all day.

You may be talented, but are you letting God sharpen you for the task He has called you to! If so, you will last… if not, it’s doubtful!

“Let the wise listen and add to their learning.”

Proverbs 1:5
