Off the hook

by Bruce Wadd

I am not into fishing, but I could imagine the exhilaration of landing a desired catch.  These days, though, it seems to be commonplace on sporting shows for fishermen to let their catches go!

There must be something even more internally satisfying than having the thrill of the catch - believing in the greater good of the environment, and letting the fish return to its natural habitat.  What a noble thought!

Today, I wanted to link the releasing of a fish with something more personal – forgiveness!

Holding resentment or anger against someone for their wrong to you is increasingly weighty.  Rather than joy, it brings negativity, pain and broken relationship. As time moves on it’s effect doesn’t lessen. Rather, it grows like an out of control cancer inside.

Some of you may have been carrying this kind of weight. The only way to get rid of unforgiveness, like the fish, is to let it go!  It’s probably the last thing you want to do, but an amazing miracle is about to happen – something that will have a transforming effect on your life!

“Forgiveness is agreeing to live with the consequences of someone else’s sin… the real choice is to live in the bondage of bitterness or in the freedom of forgiveness… if you do not forgive you are still hooked to them.” [1]

Do you want to be ‘off the hook’ from people that have wronged you?  Follow Jesus’ instruction through His prayer!

“..and forgive us our sins, just as we have forgive
those who have sinned against us.”

Matthew 6:12

TODAY, getting off the hook is simple, not painless, but incredibly liberating!
