Not so nice

by Karen Collum

There is a phrase I heard often during my childhood.  As soon as there was any hint of verbal discontent, my mother would say, “Unless you’ve got something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Although there is truth to this statement, ‘nice’ is over-rated.  Sure we should be nice to the person at the supermarket, the taxi-driver and our dentist, but - in real relationships - ‘nice’ lacks depth.  ‘Nice’ lacks authenticity.  ‘Nice’ lacks truth.

Too often ‘nice’ people are pleasant to your face and disparaging behind your back.  ‘Nice’ people are too concerned about seeking approval from others to stand up for you.  ‘Nice’ people are more worried about appearing ‘nice’ than being real.  I should know – I used to be ‘nice’.

Now I am ‘not-so-nice’.  Instead I would like to think I am kind, honest, trustworthy and dependable, even when it’s unpopular.  And I value those people in my life who are prepared to tell me the truth, even when it hurts.

“The wounds of a friend can be trusted,

but an enemy multiplies kisses.”

Proverbs 27:6

Today, stop being so nice!
