Not one mistake

by Bruce Wadd

The coach guided his players carefully through the warm-up sessions ready for the big match.  This game was a big one, a State of Origin match where passion and allegiance ran high amongst players as well as spectators.  There was everything to gain from winning, but only shame in coming second.

The first half did not go well.  Injuries, dropped ball, bad luck, ref’s calls – all seemed to go against the team from the north.  Frustration levels increased to a point of boil-over, and two players were sent to the ‘sin-bin’ for fighting.

Fatigue finally captured the players, and with the half time hooter sounding, the score was 27 to 4 – a disaster for this proud Maroon team!

The coach walked into the dressing rooms, sour faced, ready to share his revised tactics for the second half.  Players sauntered in, heads down, feeling like they had let each other and their supporters down.  What could they do?

Then came the wisdom.  “Ok guys.  You’ve made all the mistakes you are going to make.  For the next forty minutes you are going to concentrate on the basics.  No mistakes, just quality football.  OK!”  The eyes conveyed the message even more than the mouth – the coach was serious.  He wanted a perfect second half to put incredible pressure on the opposition.

Did you know that Jesus’ goal is not to lose one soul to hell?  That’s right, not one!  That includes you, your family, your friends, neighbours, workmates… and the people you meet in the street today.

The great news is… the match has already been one.  We know the result.  We just have to live through it.  All have been saved and made right with God by Jesus Christ’s sacrifice.

“So now, since we have been made right in God’s sight

by faith in his promises, we can have real peace with Him because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.”  Romans 5:1

TODAY, know and accept the end result.  All mistakes covered!
