Never too old

by Brandy Ferguson

I was surprised that I was surprised today at the mall.  Let me explain.  I saw a man walking hand in hand with his son, no biggie really, right?  There are still some sensitive, caring and devoted fathers out there - yes, it's true.  But this boy that he was holding hands with, and completely engaged in conversation with, I might add, had to have been around 11 or 12 years old, a rare thing in American culture.

I watched them as they walked in front of me, and I was surprised that I was surprised.  Why is this so uncommon these days?  Why don't we see more of this type of bond?  What is it with that kind of outward display of connectivity that people find awkward or inhibiting (or for the child's sake, embarrassing)?

Maybe you're not as struck by the parallel here, but it was plain to me:  So it is with God - you, Him, walking hand in hand, inhibitions aside, relishing one another's company.  Maybe earthly affections have left you dry and barren.  Maybe relationships for you have never amounted to anything more than superficiality.

There's a Father who will hold your hand in public, and while flashy and glamorous attractions surround your conversation, He'll be fully occupied by your presence.  He will look at you with the eyes of one who's captivated by you, and you'll feel His heart beat for yours.  He's all yours.  Take Him for a stroll!

“The LORD your God is with you,

He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you,

He will quiet you with His love,

He will rejoice over you with singing."
Zephaniah 3:17
