My maple tree

by Linda Stroud

I’ve always loved maple trees; everything about them, and so I decided to order a maple for my mountain garden.  When it arrived in the mail, I laughed to myself as it was a twig about 1.5 inches in length.

“How in the world was this ’stick’ going to grow into a beautiful tree blowing gracefully in the wind?” I asked myself.  “Were my expectations too great?”

For several years this twig sat in the soil, looking up at the sky with no apparent growth, only producing several leaves each spring to let me know it was still alive.

In spite of all the kidding I got, I was going to persevere to the end; at least until I knew for sure my maple tree had died.

Twelve years have passed.  My maple tree is now five feet high and still growing.  Not much to speak of, but to me and the maple tree, it’s a great accomplishment and beautiful to the eye.  Its many branches stretch out in thanksgiving and its leaves dance with delight in the wind.  Ahhhh!

God’s timing is important, and while we wait we grow in virtue, praising Him as we begin to see His plan unfold.

“There is a right time for everything.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1
