The Minerva challenge

by Bruce Wadd

It happens three times a week, and has done for the past three months.  My walking partner and I puff and pant our way to the top of a really steep hill called Minerva Street.

Originally it was the bane of our lives.  Every time we started at the bottom, just looking towards the top increased the weariness of our muscles.  We groaned internally, thinking of the burning lungs and straining muscles.

Minerva holds an interesting challenge though.  When you get half way up there is a slight bend to the right, uncovering another section of the street that increases in steepness even further. Then you come to the steepest section that even cars struggle to achieve.  At this point of the walk every part of you wants to stop… or screams the question – “Why am I doing this?”

However, reaching the top brings relief, fresh air and great views.  As the days have moved into weeks, the admiration of this hill and what it has done to my fitness levels has increased my appreciation of the experience.  It now is a job well done, a pleasure to reach the top every day, despite the continual deep breathing.

The Lord wants to encourage you in your walk in Him, particularly when ‘around the corner', it gets even steeper or there seems no end in sight.

Jesus said, “I will let every one who conquers

sit beside me on my throne,”

Revelation 3:21a

Today, hang in there with your Minerva challenge – the rewards are eternal!
