Love first

by Kenn Duke

“Get off me,” I say, trying to explain my reaction.  “I am getting ready for work and don’t have time for you to do that.”  The inner yearning calling me to take the time, yet the pull to be on time for work is stronger.  Yet again, “No I don’t have time. I need to get ready.”

My wife looks at me with that loving mischievous look knowing that she is pushing my boundary.  “All I want is a hug,” she states with a smile as I continue to put on my tie and run out the door.

Moments of affection in young love were never an issue.  I could be late for the sake of a hug, when we lavishly shared our deep affection pre-marriage.  Her tender touch was more valued than anything I could have on my agenda.  It is the memory of this love that reminds me of our commitment to care for each other until death.

In this I wonder about God’s love.  I can see His love reaching out to me in the young love phase.  He calls out for some space and I say, “Not now, I’m getting ready for …”

God lavishly loves me each moment.  How often I remember my response to God.  He lovingly invites me into a quiet place for a time of peace and rejuvenation with Him.

The invitation is forever active … you choose your response.

“Your unfailing love is better to me than life itself;

How I praise you!  I will honour you as long as I live,

lifting up my hands to you in prayer.

You satisfy me more than the richest of foods.

I will praise you with songs of joy.”
Psalms 63:3-5

What’s your response?
