Leash puller

by Bruce Wadd

Given the new dog in our household, most members of the family have now taken on the role of being leash pullers.  Taking this pup for a walk can be a pleasant experience, but it requires vigilance, watching for desired behaviours over the undesired.

He is being taught at the moment to walk by our sides and around the back, but he is not being allowed to walk in front, particularly in front of my feet.  When he shows the desired behaviours a pleasant and encouraging voice is used, and sometimes even edible rewards as well.

When the dog walks in an area not desired my voice changes to gruffness, and the leash is pulled quite definitely, reminding him of his master’s dissatisfaction.  As soon as the pup makes the choice to return to the acceptable area and behaviour, a reward is offered, using a pleasant voice, pats and food.

God desires and requires our best, and thus he regularly uses people and circumstances to be our leash-pullers, to give us clear messages in love about our need for change.  It is God’s way of refining us for heaven.

“If you profit from constructive criticism you will be elected to the wise men’s hall of fame.  But to reject criticism is to harm yourself and your own best interests.”

Proverbs 15:31,32

Today, let God do the ‘leash-pulling’ He needs to in your life!
