Learning from no

by Bruce Wadd

Training children can be a really challenging experience.  There are times when you as a parent need to say ‘no’ to your child without a reason.  You may even want to say ‘yes’, but you know the timing is not right, and so ‘wait’ becomes the most appropriate answer.

Often the child will stand defiantly requesting a reason, and to the best of your ability you try to explain in child-like terms.  This justification often falls on puzzled or defiant ears, with a mind that cannot see the long term impact of getting their own way right away.

It is only in hindsight that the child can look back at the ‘no’ and understand the reason for the parent’s response. And sometimes it may be years before this insight is gained!

God sometimes doesn’t respond the way we want, and we aren’t sure why.  We may complain, whinge or even defiantly have our own way anyhow.

God wants to teach and mature us.  Sometimes, without explanation, He will ask you to do something, and it is only through obedience that understanding comes.

Let me encourage you to be faithful and obedient… then maturity and understanding will abundantly flow in your life.

“I will instruct you (says the Lord) and guide you

along the best pathway for you life;

I will advise you and watch your progress.”

Psalms 32:8

TODAY, take ‘no’ as a learning opportunity!
