Language barrier by Bruce Wadd
“There is a short backward leg, point, mid-on, mid-off…” drooled the cricket commentator. And I realized at that point that despite being a cricket watcher for most of my adult life, I really didn’t know the many different field positions.
Facing foreign languages is not merely country based. There’s things like the computer industry, the surfing world, the medical fraternity, SMS vernacular, rap music [I still can’t understand many words], even ‘Christian’ speak.
The last item I refer to as ‘Christianese’. As a writer I fight against using these kinds of words all the time. Do people understand what I am saying? Am I using relatable and engaging language rather than words that separate?
So I would ask you… is your ‘Christian speak’ foreign to those around you? I encourage you to make your relationship with Jesus relatable to the people you are near.
“A tree is identified by its fruit… For a man’s heart determines his speech.” Matthew 12:33a, 34b
What language do you use?
