In gear

by Bruce Wadd

It’s a horrible sound, grating on every part of you!  Listen to it right now.  You have a learner driver, going for their first drive in a manual car.  They are nervous, but the instructor is being incredibly patient.

“Now push your clutch in. That’s right, turn the key until you can hear the engine start running.  Now select first gear. Great! Now gradually let out your clutch.”  The drive starts off rather jerkily, and then comes that horrible moment – the first ever gear change!

You hear this crunching sound, of two cogs fighting each other, clashing teeth like ‘fingernails on a blackboard’.  Quickly, but gently, the instructor’s hand guides the shaking hand of the learner into the smoothness of second gear.

He then takes a little while to explain how to change gears more smoothly, and the driving lesson improves markedly.

Is your life a bit like a rough gear change?  Grating? Frustrating? Irritable? Depressing? Even lacking direction? These could be signs that you might be ‘out of sync’ with God.  There is nothing like knowing that you are in line with His thinking!

“Loving God means doing what he tells us to do,
and really, that isn’t hard at all for every child of God
can obey him, defeating sin and evil pleasure
by trusting Christ to help him.”
1 John 5:3,4

TODAY, let God change smoothly into overdrive for you!
