Handball

 by Bruce Wadd

“Handball, it’s a handball”, the kids all screamed.

You may have heard that on a back street, in a park or on a sports oval.  Today as I performed my responsibility as ‘teacher on playground duty’, the shrieks came from competitive and passionate kids playing a game they loved - soccer!

I watched the whole scenario from start to finish.  There was a long kick from one goal square into centre field.  The ball headed straight towards a lone girl standing there.  Her arm rose automatically towards the ball.  She seemed to want to direct the ball with her hand, but at the same time knowing that it was against the rules.

What a dilemma!  But before she could do much more thinking, it had all happened.  The accusations flew her way, a penalty was given and momentum swung to the opposition.

We are so much like that as humans and Christians.  Knowing what is right, but your flesh wants to choose just the opposite.  What tension to live with!!

Thanks to Jesus we have an answer…

“Who will free me from my slavery to this
deadly lower nature?  Thank God!
It has been done by Jesus Christ our Lord.
He has set me free.”
Romans 7:25

Today, you might ‘handball’, but God has already taken the penalty!
