Gum boots

by Elizabeth Price

(Gum-boots is the Australian name for knee-high, waterproof boots!)

We have a barometer that incessantly says rain is coming but the rain does not arrive.  The barometer is telling us a lie.  It’s saying what we would like to hear at a time when we desperately need rain, but the truth is quite different.

Over time, we have become quite sarcastic towards this meteorological tool and now we say, “So where’s the promised rain?  It has not come … so where is it?”

Jesus also made a promise that He would come again and the world would end but the scoffers of his barometer are still scoffing.  “What has happened to the promise of His coming,” they scorn, as Peter said they would.
(2 Peter 3:3,4)

This morning I thought I heard thunder, but when I came out to investigate, the barometer sent a signal that looked like a pair of gum-boots.  The inscription said,

“You must be ready because
the Son of Man is coming

at an hour you do not expect.”

Matthew 24:44

The promise may come before the day is over, so I pulled my gum-boots on.  Will you put yours on now, too?
