Flame blower

by Bruce Wadd

A fire is an essential part of every camping experience. The times I go camping – not that often – I enjoy doing fire building duties.

My process is simple. In the surrounding bush, I find a variety of dry wood, from small kindling through to branches and logs, all useable during the life of the fire.

Building a ‘tepee-style’ fire works well, which means beginning with paper or bark or firelighters. Then thin kindling is stacked over the top, with pieces of wood increasing in size and length, until quite a pile of wooden fuel is standing ready for action.

Depending on the conditions, the flames usually leap into being with the first hint of fire. Within seconds there is a burgeoning blaze, ready for the evening meal.

At other times, though, the fire conditions are more difficult and it needs more attention. I get down on hands and knees, and begin blowing gently on the new flame. Too much will blow out the new flame, and too little makes no impression. Just enough wind gradually builds the intensity till the fire finally catches hold.

Are there parts of your life that need stirring? Is there a spark of hope needing encouragement? Is there a hidden talent, gift or dream inside you, that just needs a gentle constant wind of support, encouragement and belief to ignite a new or renewed passion?

Here’s a promise to hang onto today…

“…stir into flame the strength and boldness that is in you”

2 Timothy 1:6

Today, let the Holy Spirit do the right amount of blowing!
