Falls away

by Kenn Duke

“As the dross falls away my life becomes clearer,” says my new-found friend. “I didn’t realize how much rubbish was in my life until I got sick.” We spoke of misunderstandings as others still in the rush of everyday tried to console and encourage.

What do I buy next?

Where can I get what I need?

Life is full of the important until someone hits the pause button.  Life stops for a time and looking around there is a realization of the important becoming peripheral, seeming to fade away.  I want to live life!

My friend, hemmed in by the hospital walls now finds health to be central. Relationships come second and all the seemingly important fades into insignificance.

“What becomes clearer is who I am in life as it rushes by,” she says.  This snapshot of her thoughts grounds us both with a difficult innate reality.  To explain this experience to others is complicated.  To experience, is at times sheer hell.

Jesus offers light in a dark world where our once strong values fade away as illness offers space to refocus life.

“I am the light of the world.  If you follow Me,

you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, because

you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12

My new friend found the relationship focus in…

“A new commandment I give you… to love one another.”
1 John 2:7
