Embers and ashes

by Bruce Wadd

The camp owner arrived with his guitar and voice, and for forty-five minutes entertained the audience with stories of the bush, songs and ballads about Australia.  He showed everyone how to really toast marshmallows in the fire… and then he said he had a special finale for everyone.

Momentarily he disappeared into the darkness of night only to return with a long thick stick, a kangaroo’s tail – a plant looking like the marsupial’s tail!  He immediately thrust it into the coals at the bottom of the fire.  With puzzled faces the children crowded around, asking what he was doing.  His response was a typical – just wait and see!

The crowd-pleaser then instructed everyone to move to the other side of the dam and get ready.  With cameras and videos poised the throng waited.  Out of the fire came the long stick, a bright mass of embers from top to bottom.  Then he started to swing it around his head, creating a circular streak of light. To make it even more special the dam, became a mirror for this Australian light show.

You too are like a stick ablaze, your life having been rescued from a burning hell.  We all can celebrate our embers and ashes, because they represent our victory in Christ.  Miraculously, Jesus can take our lives and make them an amazing spectacle for others to see – one of incredible change and growth!

“Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from you own experience how his ways will really satisfy you.”

Romans 12:2

TODAY, may your ashes and embers lead you to the Christ of your salvation!
