Concert band

by Karen Collum

In high school, I played the flute in the concert band.  We were enthusiastic, energetic and impressive to listen to.

My sheet music, on the other hand, was less impressive.  Sure, there were some bars where I had some nice runs, or a few trills, but most of the time there were just solid, black lines.  These indicated rests – times when I didn’t have to play for 4, 8, or even 16 bars.

Playing made me feel important, but most of the time, I was in the midst of one of those long rests, flute on my lap, counting the beats till it was my turn again.

The trumpet hits the high note.  I’m still counting.  The drum solo beats out loud and clear.  Still counting.  The triangle takes the stage with a well-timed ‘ting’.  Counting... Then it’s my turn!

In concert band, I learned that when it’s your turn, you’d better be ready - people certainly notice if you’re not there!

“Yet who knows whether

you have come to the kingdom

for such a time as this?”

Esther 4:14

Are you ready to play your part in this great orchestra called life?
