Catching butterflies

by Karen Collum

Two-year-old Samuel has a favourite game called ‘Elefun’.  Flick the switch and butterflies come flying out of the elephant’s long, blue trunk.  Samuel runs around with a net trying to catch the butterflies before they hit the ground.  When successful he shouts, “Got one!”

Our thought-life can be like a bunch of butterflies.  It’s difficult to keep track of them all.  Thoughts flit from here to there and back again.  Good thoughts, bad thoughts; new ideas, old concerns; helpful thoughts, destructive thoughts.

Although we have little control over what enters our mind, we can control what we do with our thoughts.  Choosing to dwell on negative, unhelpful or sinful thoughts can result in actions we may later regret.

Here’s some great advice.

 "...we take every thought captive

and make it obey Christ."

2 Corinthians 10:5b GNB

Imagine if we took this text seriously.  Imagine if we became ‘thought catchers’, giving up every thought in obedience to Christ!  We could learn to replace our ungodly thoughts with God-honouring thoughts, one at a time.

With practice, we could soon be shouting, “Got one!” too!
