A perfect response

by Linda Stroud

A group of ladies from our parish gathered for tea and scones at a local café.  The youngest, in her late twenties, seemed to be the focus of conversation. Comments and questions being fired at her began to make her feel a bit uncomfortable.

“So . . . is there someone special in your life?”

“Maybe you should date more!”

“I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t fall in love with you.”

“There are so many fish in the ocean; you should be able to find someone!”

“You’re so pretty. What’s wrong?”

Everyone had something to say in regards to this young lady’s future spouse.  With each proclamation, she smiled and graciously nodded, showing no irritability.

Finally, one of the ladies put her finger to her mouth gesturing for everyone to be quiet.  The inertia began to cool down.  It was now time for the young lady to respond.

Reverently, and with great conviction, she said, “Yes, there are many Christian men that I’ve met, but I’m looking for that special one who has fallen in love with Jesus.”

The entire atmosphere at the tea party changed.  Reflective dialogue emerged due to this young lady’s one sentence, yet so powerful, response.

When we’re faced with challenging questions, may we be able to respond (like this young lady) with truth and ready to bring God the glory.

“Let my words express the uprightness

of my heart, and my lips speak what they know

with utter sincerity.”

Job 33:3
